Prismic Missile

Prismic Missile

I was remembering some good old times playing Wizardry on my Macintosh SE (which I still have...and it still works), and I remembered that in later editions of the series, and I think in some other games as well, there was always a funky spell called "Prismic Missile", which I always loved because of its random effects that were actually pretty decent. I think an adapted version of the ... "spell" ... for Spectrum might be interesting as a :rl: action or for a :rl: deck.

Here's some thoughts on what it could do:

Prismic Missile, cost ? :rl: (let's say a high number, though)

Target: One ship.

Effect: When this action is used, something is randomly selected from the following list. (ideas can be deleted or added as required)

1. Target ship is destroyed outright.
2. Target ship's attack is reduced by 10.
3. Target ship gains the following ability: When this ship attacks, it also damages allied ships in neighboring slots.
4. Target ship loses all abilities, and defence is reduced by 10.
5. Target ship cannot attack or use abilities next turn, and a random structure owned by the owner of target ship is destroyed.
6. Target ship turns into a Frogolith (this totally needs to be renamed).
Frogolith stats: attack 3, defence 45
-Automatic Ability: When this ship damages a ship or base, it deals 5 damage to its owner's base.
-Activated Ability: cost 6 :rl: : This ship cannot attack this turn and its attack is set to 3.
7. Target ship receives 15 damage, and the owner of target ship receives 10 damage.
8. Target ship is placed on top of its owner's deck, and the owner of target ship has energy drained equal to the amount and color of the cost of target ship.

I can't wait to not put that in my decks.

It would probably be cool for all of 2 games.

Not that I want you to make this card, but all you would have to say on the card is "Has a random effect".

It exist a deck mod called "Randomizer" where all ships have random abilities.

It's the closest thing - have an action that picks from the random available targeted actions when played. Only trouble is i can't just let it pick any action as some are structure only, etc - so i'd have to make a list of available actions for this cards, plus for each action a range of acceptable values for the effect strength where needed. A fair bit of work tho.

There is also a enviroment that randomize abilities. You has mentioned it.

There was an MTG game called Shandalar and there was a card in it that I really hated that was called Whimsy.

It went something like this

Whimsy
UUX
Sorcery
Generate X random effects.

The AI would play it with X equal to like 10 and there would be no telling what the board would look like afterwards.

I didn't figure the card would pass. :P

Nevertheless, I *would* inquire as to whether some of the ideas I suggested have any merit - I.E. - an action that morphs an enemy ship into a different card that has detrimental effects on that player (but could perhaps be powerful enough to still be useful to that player). Or the ability to make your own ship hurts other ships, etc...

how about this:

Prismic Missile
1 :rl:
generates an effect corresponding to the race who's energy you have the most of
:hu: : 5 damage to the opposing base, heals all ships for 5
:ca: : drains 5 energy from the opponent, deals 5 damage to targeted ship
:xy: : increases the defense of all allied ships by 5, gives you 25 hitpoints
:cc: : deals 1 damage to 5 random ships, allows a random ship to attack.
:rv: : repairs the base for 10, gives you 1 resist
:mt: : reduces the opposing base hitpoints by 5, generates 5 :rl:
:tm: : draw-deny your opponent, bounce target ship
:rd: : drain all :rd: and add X to your hitpoints, X=the amount of energy drained this way

(hover-over can be held using a hotkey, so you can scroll what the ability says)

I don't mind some randomness, but when it becomes extreme it's better off being optional. That's why i included both a randomizer environment and deck mod. The environment changes all abilities of all cards in play every turn, the deck mod gives all cards in a deck random abilities before the fight starts. (For additional randomness you can add in the environment that swaps ships around randomly each turn as well).

I've played a number of games like that and it's good fun. There's little point in having good deck building skills here, but the unpredictable nature of such games can be very entertaining. It's not to everyone's liking, hence it's optional (and massive) randomness.
