No longer wanting to rely on [[xyth:orgs:alpha|Alpha Shipyards]] for combat and mining ships, especially since their assumed involvement in the theft of a mining freighter, the [[xyth:orgs:dse|Deep Space Excavation]] group (DSE) set out to build their own vessels. Until then they had been using two different [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]] configurations in their mining fleets, one to perform the actual mining and one to protect the fleet. [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]] wanted to create a similar ship that could be easily converted from industrial to fighter and back. This was part of a larger plan by Xyth's government, who had full control over [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]] to drastically reduce the power and influence of [[xyth:orgs:alpha|Alpha Shipyards]] on one hand, and both the [[xyth:orgs:gox|GoX]] and [[xyth:orgs:xlg|XLG]] on the other hand. They wanted not only full control of Xyth's industrial capabilities, but also of the battlefleets.

The [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]] was a simple design, and thus easily reverse engineered by [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]]. While they wanted their own ship, it was really the capability of building a vessel that [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]] was after - any vessel. In an attempt to disguise the fact that they had basically stolen the [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]] design, their ship was given a smooth and sleek hull. Since their ship was essentially a [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]], the various support and repair stations present on the [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]] mining freighters, which were optimized for [[xyth:orgs:alpha|Alpha Shipyards]] their [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]], were just as useful for the Vulture.

Despite its origin, the Vulture did grew into a proper specialized industrial-fighter hybrid, but it never truly surpassed the [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]] in combat situations. Continued improvements to the design eventually did away with all elements that had been based on the [[xyth:ships:vector|Vector]], and additional configurations came into existence, of which the electronic warfare variant became an important cornerstone of large, multi-purpose deep-space fleets and small hit-and-run squadrons alike. The shape of the ship's hull in theory would be ideal for an active cloaking system, but [[xyth:orgs:dse|DSE]] engineers never succeeded in creating a working prototype, something that [[xyth:orgs:core|Core Special Operations]] did manage not much later.
