Background lore

With the Vector being both the least complex and most common ship in the human fleets, it became the perferred choice to participate in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that would one day be capable of controlling combat ships. In the early stages, Vectors were equipped with sensors that tracked all pilot decisions and everything the sensors of the ships picked up. The combination of these two sets of data would allow to formulate a set of ideal pilot behaviours for any possible situation the ship found itself in. If this optimal pilot behaviour could then be fed straight into the ship's controls, one basically had an autonomous vessel. The simplicity of the Vector's control systems however, made that last part difficult to achieve. Vectors were originally fighters that operated in Earth's atmosphere, and very little of the ship's control systems were changed while so much else of it was upgraded to allow it to operate in space. While functional, it was an outdated system compared to all other vessels in the human fleets. The decision was made to build an entirely new fighter class ship, one optimized to be controlled by AI instead of pilots, rather than attempt to adjust the Vector design. The Delta class fighter was the result, but these ships weren't left to the control of AI right away. With the Delta being different from the Vector, not all the data gathered during the testing phases with the Vector could be applied to the new ship. On top of that, it seemed a good idea to turn the Delta into a hybrid so that it could still be piloted by a human, should there ever be a need to. That is why the Delta, with its otherwise sleek and minimal hull, still features a cockpit, but it was one that could be easily removed in favor of a small additional fuel pod or ammo container, depending on whether the Delta operated as scout ship or fighter.
