Open vs Ranked PvP
Open pvp :
In this pvp mode, you can only use the cards that you have unlocked thus far. This will be the same set of cards as the one that's available to you for single player games. This includes all upgraded cards you might have collected. There can only be 4 copies of each card (across all upgrade levels) in a deck.
Ranked pvp :
In this pvp mode, all cards, excluding uniques are available for deckbuilding, even if you don't have access to them for single player games. Uniques are only available if you have unlocked them previously. Upgraded cards can not be used in ranked pvp, but if you have a deck that contains upgraded cards, the game will temporarily revert those to non-upgraded cards for duration of a ranked pvp duel. Almost all cards can have 4 copies each in a deck, with the exception of restricted cards, whose maximum amount is lower than 4. All uniques, for instance, are restricted to one copy per ranked pvp deck.
While in the multiplayer lobby, your list of decks will show small labels indicating wether or not a deck is compatible in either pvp mode. For more info regarding deck compatibility, read the 'Deck compatibility' topic, further in this help section.
PvP scores & ranks
In both ranked and open pvp, you gain or lose pvp points. These points are then turned into ranks (ranging from 0 to 20), the higher your pvp scores are, the higher your ranks will be. In the lobby, you can see the rank of other players on the games they've made. The rank of a player gives you an indication of this player's skill or success in pvp duels.
You gain points everytime you win a game, but the amount of points you get depend on both your rank and your opponent's rank. If your opponent's rank is higher than yours, you'll gain more points, the higher the difference is between your and your opponent's ranks. If your opponent's rank is lower than yours, you'll gain less points than when your rank is lower. If you lose a pvp duel, you also lose some pvp points (on average you'll lose less points than you would have gained if you won against opponents with the same rank). The stronger your opponent is or the lower your rank is, the fewer points you lose.
Notify & spectating
Notify :
In the multiplayer lobby, you'll see a list of players that are looking for an opponent. If you're waiting for opponents with a specific rank or for a specific player, you can refresh the lobby until you see games that you might want to join. However, you can let the game notify you the moment a game is created. In the bottom left corner there are two notify options, one for ranked games and one for open games. Turn either of these on, and you'll be told when new games are created, even if you're no longer in the lobby. You will even be notified if you're currently in a singleplayer or pvp duel. The notification will appear at the bottom of the screen and tells you the name and rank of the player who is looking for an opponent as well as the game type (open or ranked).
Spectating :
In the bottom half of the lobby, you can opt to join one of several spectator rooms. Each of these rooms is capable of showing the status of up to 10 pvp games that are currently being played. If you want to see the board and watch the game progress in greater detail, click any of the game entries in a spectator room to go to the detail view.
